What we fit

Folding-arm awnings

Big retractable shade over a terrace, with nothing standing on the paving. The arms fold back into a cassette and the stoep is a sunny stoep again.

Why retractable, specifically

A permanent roof over a Waterkloof terrace solves February and ruins June. The whole argument for a folding-arm awning is that it is temporary: out over lunch in high summer, folded away when you want the low winter sun on the paving and into the back of the house. In a city with 200-plus clear days a year, that reversibility is worth more than the shade itself.

Specification that lasts

The arms carry the load, so they are where the money goes: forged or cast elbows, stainless tensioning, a torsion bar sized to the projection. Acrylic canopy fabrics hold their colour under this much high-altitude sun far better than cheaper polyesters, and they shed a shower rather than soaking it up. Full cassettes close over the folded fabric completely, which roughly doubles the practical life of the cloth.

Wind is the real design case

No awning should ride out a highveld thunderstorm extended — it is a shade structure, not a roof. We quote wind classes honestly and, on anything motorised, push a wind sensor: it retracts the awning automatically when the gusts build, whether you are home or not. A sun sensor can extend it in the morning too, so the terrace is already shaded when you walk out.

Practical notes

  • Wall, roof-rafter or soffit fixing — we survey the substrate before quoting, because a good awning is only as good as what it is bolted to.
  • Projection up to around four metres; wider spans usually take a coupled pair.
  • Valance drop for the low sun that comes in under the canopy at the end of the day.
  • Where a body corporate or street expects a particular look, we quote to an agreed fabric and frame colour.
  • Pair with a zip screen down the open side to deal with wind and insects.

Where we fit it

Folding-arm awnings shade the terraces of Groenkloof and Waterkloof most often, and just as readily those of Waterkloof Ridge, Brooklyn, Menlo Park and Hazelwood.
